“SkyDivers” von Flowers in Syrup – Ja, sie machen wirklich Rockmusik

Die Stuttgarter Band Flowers in Syrup will’s wissen und richtet sich mit ihrer neuen Platte “SkyDivers” an die weltweite Rock-Hörerschaft. Das ist so konsequent wie mutig, findet unser Autor.

Stuttgart – Was ist eigentlich aus Alternative Rock geworden? Einst als tatsächliche Alternative zum etablierten Hard Rock gestartet, geschah damit, was so vielen Gitarrenmusikgenres widerfuhr: es wurde, gefühlt zumindest, links und rechts überholt von anderen, innovativeren Alternativen. Oder, wie Gordon Raphael uns kürzlich sinngemäß gesagt hat: aus Rockmusik holst du nichts Neues mehr raus, es geht um den Spirit dahinter. Dazu passt die Meldung, dass HipHop jetzt beliebter ist als Rock, in den Staaten jedenfalls.
Insofern ist der Stuttgarter Band Flowers in Syrup nicht nur Respekt dafür zu zollen, dass sie nach dem vor Jahren gewonnenem Emergenza-Wettbewerb mit ihrer inzwischen zweiten EP weiter eifrig am Durchbruch arbeitet – sondern auch, dass sie das im besagten Genre Alternative Rock tut.
“SkyDivers” enthält fünf Songs, die sich aber fast wie ein ganzes Album anfühlen, weil sie so vollgestopft sind mit Ideen, Melodien, unerwarteten Brüchen. Doch diese Musik ist nicht l’art pour l’art, sondern sie ist da, um gehört und gemocht zu werden. Davon kann man sich auch live überzeugen – und feststellen, dass ein so komplexer, dichter Sound von nur drei Musikern gemacht wird.
Diese Platte ist auch und zuallererst als Gesamtkunstwerk zu sehen. Es gibt da nicht die eine Hymne, den einen Killersound, und der Gitarrist und Sänger Costantino Campello Squeo ist gerade so gut und wichtig und präsent wie seine Bandkollegen Nico Mania (Schlagzeug) und Tobias Sippel (Bass). Bei der Produktion der EP haben die Band, ihr Manager Thomas Riesbeck und Frithjof Rödel mit dem Echo an ein, zwei Stellen etwas übertrieben und man würde Nico Manias Schlagzeug klanglich noch etwas mehr Durchschlagkraft wünschen – am Drummer liegt’s aber sicher nicht.
Aber das sind Details, und genau deshalb macht man ja erst einmal eine EP und vielleicht auch noch eine zweite, so wie in diesem Fall. Dass Flowers in Syrup sich konsequent nicht auf den deutschen Markt beschränken, sondern zumindest die englischsprachige Alternative-Rock-Szene ansprechen, tut der Musik nicht Unrecht und ist auch aus geschäftlicher Sicht kein Fehler.
Jedenfalls, um zur Ausgangsfrage zurückzukehren: Wenn das aus Alternative Rock geworden ist, hat die Richtung gestimmt. Zeit, sich in dieses Genre mal wieder reinzuhören. Flowers in Syrup wären ein guter Einstieg.

Certainly no strangers is the Flowers in Syrup captivating music to us here at FORKSTER Music Promotions. It was an exceptional honour in covering them back in the November/December months of 2015, with a promo spot we did for them on their significant debut EP entitled “Getting Closer”. We have always felt since then that they were a very important music statement and they really had a good shot at becoming an extremely significant band on the independent rock circuit for years to come. Well, they are certainly going to make us look even more admirable at picking bands on the music rise globally now. Their amazing new music is almost upon us and they could potentially have a music accomplishment in becoming a household name in the global ear rock module communities, it’s that smashing good.
Flowers in Syrup releases their 2nd studio EP “SkyDivers” digitally everywhere on the 23rd of June 2017, as well as you will be able to purchase it worldwide as a physical CD on the 4th of August 2017.
One characteristic that we felt all along that separated Flowers in Syrup from most of the pack was a music maturity fullness. When we recently were notified from their management that they would be purchasing our services again for helping in promoting their latest music we were thrilled, but even with being personal fans of their music honestly I don’t think we saw this coming and ‘wow’ is FORKSTER himself personally thrilled to bits in providing you all the rocking goods on this massive EP’s flair.
“SkyDivers” is a music masterpiece. The EP superbly gleams out an all- powerful rock grandeur with an exceptionally gifted experimental swirling madness. A lot to do with creating this gem was how the trio from Stuttgart, Germany, Costantino Campello Squeo (vocalist/guitarist), Nico Mania (drummer) and Tobias Sippel (bassist), let us all worry about what we categorized it as and they magnificently went on to make a record that kept to their standard alternative rock platform, but for the more diverse alt-rock fans you’ll hear and absolutely ‘rock out’ for their post-rock brightness, hard rock crunch and their atmospheric noise rock charm.
This undeniably gifted music EP has taken their musicianship maturity and overall song structures to the comparisons now of atmospheric rock goliaths such as U2 and Radiohead. They have that desire and extra kick in the music tank to push the experimentation bar, but at the same time establish entire efforts where every song on it is worthy and wanted for their own listening purposes from playing out universally on radio stations to music appreciators everywhere who want them now in their constant/daily music playlists, gargantuan music release!

I Flowers In Syrup sono un gruppo di Stoccarda. Il loro sound è un perfetto mix di influenze facilmente riconoscibili dal grande pubblico, ma i ragazzi sono riusciti a personalizzarlo, rendendo l’ascolto di questo lavoro piacevole e divertente. Abbiamo recensito “SkyDivers”, il loro secondo EP, per voi. L’EP si apre con l’energica Song about peaches and Mars, un brano ottimo per un viaggio in bus, vista anche la fotografia urbana che si sviluppa attraverso la narrazione. Anche dopo molti ascolti, la canzone risulta forse quella più debole di SkyDivers, rimanendo relegata al ruolo di mera prefazione.
È con Ghost che si aprono davvero le danze. I Flowers In Syrup dimostrano con questa traccia di avere le idee chiare sul proprio sound, che pur rifacendosi alla scena rock mainstream degli ultimi 30 anni, propone un sapiente mix di elementi, risultando fresco e innovativo, oltre che ben studiato.
Black ocean tira fuori l’anima nordica e selvaggia della band, discosandosi inizialmente dalle influenze anglosassoni degli altri brani per poi progredire verso atmosfere splendidamente dark. Si tratta di un pezzo contaminato e ammaliante, oserei dire il mio preferito di SkyDivers.
Standing still continua sulla strada oscura, presentandoci quel lato dei Flowers che è meno U2 e più The Cure. È un pezzo prodotto meravigliosamente curato nei dettagli, fiore all’occhiello di tutto l’EP, con un testo che emoziona l’ascoltatore al di fuori della musica.
SkyDivers si chiude con Codes in the clouds, che ricorda i lavori di Bono e co. elaborandoli con un gusto più alternativo. È forse il brano più rappresentativo della peculiarità di questo gruppo: strutture particolari che alleggeriscono l’ascolto e impreziosiscono tutto questo lavoro.
I Flowers In Syrup sono un gruppo giovane, ma ascoltando questo lavoro ho avuto l’impressione che i ragazzi abbiano già raggiunto una grande consapevolezza di sé, indispensabile per farsi strada nella musica e creare un sound facilmente riconoscibile e apprezzabile.
Se riusciranno a abbandonare le proprie influenze, fidandosi del proprio istinto e assecondando l’estro che cerca di emergere per tutto SkyDivers, avranno una lunga carriera di successi internazionali. EP promosso, confidando nel fatto che i Flowers inizino a scommettere davvero sul proprio – evidente – talento.

Trafo goes live in concert

Das Trafo hatte sich mittlerweile komplett gefüllt. Wahnsinn! Circa 150 Besucher auf einem Jugendhaus Konzert? Das erlebt man selten.
Weiter geht es mit dem absoluten Highlight des Abends: Flowers in Syrup.
Ich wusste nicht wirklich was mich erwartet. Hab ich davor noch nie gesehen. Das einzige was mir von einem Freund vor Ort gesagt wurde war, dass sie anscheinend „Demon-Pop“ machen.
Desto mehr war ich geplättet von dem, was diese Band abgeliefert hat. Das war einfach eine perfekte Show. Eigentlich gar nicht meine Musikrichtung, aber ich war hin und weg von der Präzision und gleichzeitigen Leidenschaft der Performance, von der ausgefallenen und aufwendigen Komposition der Lieder und dem Durchhaltevermögen der 3 Jungs. Denn das Publikum, mittlerweile frenetisch tanzend, verlangte eine Zugabe nach der anderen. Und die haben sie auch bekommen! Am Ende konnte ich nicht mehr mitzählen wie viele Zugaben es waren , aber es wurden alle Register gezogen. So wurde auch ein Lied mit dem Satz „Dieses Lied kennt noch nicht einmal unser Techniker Basti“ angesagt. Erst als die Band wirklich mit ihrem Repertoire am Ende war, und gegen den Willen des immer noch „Zugabe“-fordernden Publikums ihre Instrumente ablegte, leerte sich das Trafo langsam.

5 lange Tracks sorgfältig arrangierte Melancholie. Da hat es PLACEBO, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, EDITORS, Kühl-Nordisches und etwas, das auch vor BRYAN ADAMS nur knapp halt machen will.
Die mal fräsende, mal verhallte Gitarre holt die zu unschönen Themen weit ausholenden Texte brüderlich auf den Boden zurück, auf dem ein warmer Bass und bestens eingestellte Drums aus Erfurter Studiowelten leben.
Nicht zu finster, nicht zu lapidar, nicht zu Pop: anheimelnd.

Das Trio FLOWERS IN SYRUP aus Stuttgart verliert sich in gut gemachten und intelligent instrumentierten Brit Pop-Reminiszenzen, ohne dabei den nötigen Drive missen zu lassen.
In Teilen mögen da PLACEBO, ALT-J oder MUSE Pate gestanden haben.
In jedem Fall hat die Band ein ausgeprägtes Gespür für griffige und catchy Melodiebögen, während der Gesang an die Art von Indie-Bands erinnert, die den C86-Sound repräsentieren.
„Getting Closer“ bietet als Debüt einen vielversprechenden Sound, der Spannung auf mehr aufkommen lässt.

Flowers in Syrup, einst sowas wie die Gewinner des Emergenza-Bandcontests, spielen wahrlich ausgereiften Indie-Rock, der sich in seiner Musikalität vor den Bands der vielfach gepriesenenen Nordbahnhof-Szene keineswegs zu verstecken braucht. Mehr noch, bei diesen Songs gleicht zumeist kein Part dem anderen. Die Songs stellen ihre Ingredienzien – mal ein mäandernder Bass, mal ein schepperndes Becken – ganz nackt in die Auslage und sind doch ungemein zugänglich.
Es ist verständlich, dass diese Band gerade versucht, die große Promotour zu fahren. So souverän wie sie den Gig im Zwölfzehn runterspielt, würde sie das auch auf den Festivalbühnen tun. Also, liebe Industrie: zugreifen!

Wir waren t.act beim Thomann-Sommerfest 2016!

Das Musikhaus Thomann suchte noch drei junge Live-Acts für das Thomann-Sommerfest 2016! 1600 Bands und Solokünstler hatten an der Backstage PRO-Aktion teilgenommen, um einen der drei exklusiven Slots zu ergattern. Zehn Finalisten standen im Voting – wir haben es geschafft. Am 12. Juni 2016 zog es 11000 Musikfans nach Treppendorf!

In unserer neuen Reihe stellen wir euch die heißesten Acts aus dem Backstage PRO-Bandpool vor. Diesmal im Rampenlicht: Flowers in Syrup, eine Alternative/Indie-Rock-Band aus Stuttgart.
Ob Blumen im Sirupmantel gut schmecken? Wir möchten es lieber nicht ausprobieren. Umso schmackhafter ist hingegen die Stuttgarter Band Flowers in Syrup, die mit ihrem Alternative Rock sphärische Klangwelten mit ordentlicher Gesangspower abliefert. Die Musik lässt sich irgendwo zwischen Placebo und Dredg verordnen, behält aber durch das authentische Auftreten des Trios ihre ganz eigene Note.

Sieger bei Emergenza

Im Jahr 2013 gewannen Flowers in Syrup den nationalen Emergenza Bandcontest. Im Emergenza Weltfinale desselben Jahres belegten sie einen stolzen 15. Platz bei 4000 Teilnehmern. Die Live-Auftritte der Band haben es also gewaltig in sich. Auch dieses Jahr werden die drei Stuttgarter auf mehreren Bühnen ihr Bestes geben. … am Ende FLOWERS IN SYRUP als strahlende Sieger auf der Bühne standen und es selbst gar nicht glauben konnten. Aber ihre Songs waren eben genauso gut, wie die der anderen Indiebands, nur noch dynamischer und viel emotionaler und wenn man erst mal Gänsehaut oder feuchte Augen bei Musik bekommt, dann ist das dieser eine besondere Moment, der eben den feinen Unterschied machen kann. Und genau diesen Moment hat das Trio aus Stuttgart mal wieder erwischt. Keine Rockstarallüren, kein großes Entertainmentprogramm. Einfach nur ein Junge mit seiner Gitarre, der dich mit seiner Stimme und seinen Emotionen da trifft, wo es manchmal weh tut, aber auch manches mal unglaublich schön ist – mitten ins Herz. Ganz ohne Kitsch oder aufgesetztem Getue – einfach nur ehrlich. Bildlich gesprochen hat sich Frontmann Tino an dem Abend nackig gemacht, seine Seele für die Zuschauer geöffnet und das ist es, was die Leute haben wollen.“
